70 Things To Do When You Get Your New Job

Policies, Processes, and Keys

Welcome to Sunday Morning Coach. Every week I share actionable and repeatable ideas about athletic leadership, football, and baseball.

I became a high school teacher and coach because I knew there would always be a job. Somewhere in Texas (where I live), there would be a school that needed my services.

During my 30+ career I have never lacked employment. My career choice was a good one. I have always had employment at a school of my choice. I guess I am lucky. The longest time I spent at one school was 8 years and the shortest I stayed was 3.

Zappia.com (job recruiting service) states that coaches move every two years.

You may not be on the move now; but trust me, sometime during your career you will be. To help you out with your move from one school to the other I have jotted down everything you need to know when you walk into your new school. Moreover, this list can be used by all levels of coaches, but this list is mainly written for head coaches.

Starting Your New Job

Starting a new job is very exciting and you want to hit the ground running. There are many things you want to get done. With a little organization and asking the right people you will have all the answers you want in a matter of days.

You want to be as organized as possible when asking questions in order not to bother the same person periodically throughout the first month on the job, especially the head football coach as he prepares his team for another challenging year.

Thus, I sat down one night and thought of all the many things I must get the answers to in order to get going at my new job and to complete this task in a timely manner.

As I reflected on the process, I came up with the following items and would like to share them with you. Hopefully, this will make your transition to a new school as a head coach smoother.
