Reflecting on my 30 year career, I can say without a doubt that getting a player’s full attention day in and day out is hard to do. Kids today are seeking instant gratification and want a shortcut, or easy path to success. Heck, sometimes the player may not care about winning or losing, they just want to belong.

On the other hand, I can attest to the fact that there are still some hard nosed kids that want to play the sport and give it all they have. There is no doubt a player is “all in” or “committed” to the team.

How do you tell?

Is it because they are in the weight room, is it because they finish their sprints, is it because they are the first in the building and the last to leave, or is it because they are a starter with big play potential?

I’ve even heard coaches say the kid is not committed because he doesn’t fundraise or the parents are not in the booster club.

There are lots of reasons a player may lack commitment and today I will share with you 4 reasons why a player may lack commitment and finish off with 6 strategies you can use to help them “buy in.”

The Poll

I ran a poll on Twitter that asked what was the number one concern of coaches heading into the new school year? Here are the results. Before you send me an email; yes, I know I misspelled “commitment” in the poll - LOL.

Let’s dive in and see why athletes lack commitment!
